More on declining cancer deaths

read time: 120 words, just a minute

Newsweek dug further into the latest cancer deaths statistics.

Cancer deaths for me decreased 16.3% between 1990 and 2003. For women the decrease was 8.5%… quite a difference.

The biggest difference was in lung cancer.

The results are being attributed to smoking… men have been smokers for over 100 years. Women didn’t start to “come a long way baby” until 1965, escalating until around 1985. That habit started 40 years ago is now showing up in the lung cancer death statistics.

Another notable male – female difference noted is 90% of male cancer deaths are smokers. For women, 80% are smokers. Second hand smoke is believed to account for the difference.

Lung cancer accounts for 26% of cancer deaths for women.
